In another sexist cover, Time uses porn cliche for Hillary Clinton story

In the new Time, to illustrate the cover article “Can Anyone Stop Hillary?” the magazine uses cliche porn imagery, showing a man trapped beneath a woman’s shoe.

Seriously, Time?

What did you use for inspiration, this YouTube video? (One of thousands just like it.)

Or perhaps, this shot from a porn site? (One of millions just like it)

With so many options, I picked this image because its caption “Ending the sexual dark age,” listed in the category “dominatrix in heels standing on male slave’s chest” seems to echo the point Time’s cover attempts to make.

The Hillary Clinton cover isn’t the first time a “news weekly” has borrowed from porn. There was this cover of Newsweek. The subject of the story: great food.

Time also did a story featuring the “best” chefs. No porn, but the magazine opted for this pic. Hmmm…what’s missing here?

That’s right, Time’s “Gods of Food” story featured ZERO women.

Wouldn’t it be nice if “news” magazines weren’t sexist? What would our news look like then? Does anyone even know?

  1. A man crushed under the feet (either wearing high-heels or barefoot ) of a woman is a very common male fantasy/fetish.This is why there are thousands of such videos on youtube.I guess the people at Time.,knowing how widespread this fantasy/fetish is they use in on the cover. But yeah while for many men this is sexual for women this can work like Aubri says , i.e. be about female power,an unstoppable woman.

  2. As a woman, and an hrc supporter, I can’t help but Not see porn when I look at this. I see an unbeatable force walking away from a small and petty nuisance that doesn’t even stand a chance of catching her, let alone stopping her.
I think there’s more of your own psyche happening in this interpretation of the cover than there is pornographic intent.
As for the chefs: be angry at the industry, not the media reporting on it. More than enough articles have been written about how women are systematically blocked from higher levels and positions of power in the cooking world. Be pissed about that.
Not saying you’re wrong. There’s pornographic interpretations and representations everywhere. Just saying it’s silly to Make something pornographic when the pickings are already so ripe.

  3. I hate to say it, but I bet Time didn’t use a photo of HRC herself because newsstand sales might have slumped for that issue. The media’s horrible treatment of Hillary is nothing new, sadly.

  4. Unfortunately what we call “news” is still a product and sex still sells products. I think it is important to remember that the “news” is a product and not necessarily the muckraking, reliable source we expect it to be, sadly. That’s why a lot of the “news” channels traffic in fear-mongering.
