If you’re daughter likes reading fantasy, I’d recommend Diana Wynne Jones. She is one of my favorite authors.
Are you familiar with the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Young_Wizards)? My husband and I read these young adult books and really enjoyed them. We “discovered” them when we were reading the Harry Potter series, though Duane’s series was first; So, You Want to Be a Wizard came out in ’83. The main protagonist is a young teenaged girl (though many supporting characters are male).
