Can you find the female in Sony’s Arthur Christmas movie poster?

Just picked my daughters up from school and we saw this poster huge and high above us by the Walgreens. Do you see Mrs. Claus tucked behind Santa? Do you think that reindeer is a girl? And can you imagine a poster for a kid’s movie titled with a girl’s name showing twelve female characters and one male? This gender imbalance isn’t petty. It’s everywhere and it’s shocking. For more invisible girls, see Reel Girl’s gallery of kids films in 2011.

  1. Actually, the purpose of discussing things is not to relish the fact that others agree, is it? If it is, that becomes the very illustration of pointlessness very quickly.

And whether or not you can see it, there is a point to it. What was the message from the Chapstick/butt protest? Is there any fair way to distill it other than “don’t you dare portray women in any way that fails to meet our approval or else you’ll be hearing from us.” Very well, then. Here, now, is another commercial enterprise meeting up with disapproval for not displaying women with sufficient prominence. So the message is bound to come across garbled and mixed.

If I need to explain it any further, that would indicate you might be the type who calls people “trolls” any time they have an opinion you find disagreeable, and have the audacity to go ahead & type it in. That’s not really what a troll is.

    • Morgan,

Your comments are devolving and I agree with Lexica completely. Reel Girl is all about how women and girls are portrayed in the media. If you take that as “don’t you dare portray women in any way that fails to meet our approval or else you’ll be hearing from us,” you should not waste your time and ours coming here.

      Margot

      • Well if it’s a monologue and not a dialogue, you’re free to say so anytime. Don’t wanna listen to me, fine, don’t listen to me.

I’m just telling you — if I work in an art department for a marketing firm, and my boss comes in and says “Do whatever you can to avoid a Chapstick debacle or else I’m gonna string you up”: I am going to put out something that looks very much like the poster you’re complaining about right now. Maybe you’ve got a logical counterargument for that, but if it’s nothing more than “I just don’t wanna hear it, can’t hear you la la la” then I think we have an understanding why there’s so much effort involved in this movement, across such a great expanse of time, and you’re still not happy with the situation as it exists.

  2. Morgan K Freeberg, you’re clearly not interested in actually discussing the things Margot posts about. Why do you continue to waste your time and hers with these pointless troll comments?

  3. Obviously, they’re afraid to incur your wrath. I’d be doing exactly the same thing. In fact, I notice it’s impossible to get a bearing on Ms. Claus’ gorgeous round derriere. So…your Chapstick protest worked. What’s the complaint?
