Perez Hilton no expert on ‘ladies’

Perez Hilton justified the crotch shot he posted to his Twitter feed of Miley Cyrus, claiming he was trying to teach her to act like a lady.

Derek Blasberg's Classywww.amazon.com

Perez isn’t the only guy around instructing women on how to behave. Derek Blasberg, a 27 year old from Missouri, recently came out with a modern manners how-to, just for the gentler sex: Classy: Exceptional Advice for the Extremely Modern Lady.

When I saw this at a bookstore, I thought it was a joke. Alas no, Blasberg sold his wisdom to a publisher, and it’s fast on it’s way to becoming a best-seller. In the intro Blasberg writes: “I can categorize the young women I’ve met through my trials and travails into two groups: ladies and tramps.”

It’s 2010– can we please stop recycling this age old virgin/ whore dichotomy? And while we’re at it, stop slut-shaming Miley Cyrus already, criticizing her clothing, her dancing, and her song lyrics in an endless 24 hour media cycle. Cyrus doesn’t need the media telling her how to behave anymore than women need advice from Blasberg on how to be classy.

No woman, in her twenties no less, would ever get way with writing a condescending tome like Blasberg’s and be recognized as some kind of witty authority on how a man can act like a man. But maybe she ought to. Here’s something for her first chapter: Don’t take and publish crotch shots. It’s not gentlemanly.

  1. Gosh, I dunno. I agree with you completely about Mr. Hilton, who in the world needs to learn anything about manners or refinement from that guy. But from perusing the link, it seems the whole point of Mr. Blasberg’s book is humor, and without some samples I can’t judge one way or t’other.

But there is something terribly wrong going on in the world of fashion/culture lately, and “too many people passing judgment” is NOT it. I’m not sure what point you’re making here, really. You’re saying you don’t want people passing judgment on the other sex — in either direction? So you don’t want women pointing out the deficiencies in the way men look and behave? I doubt that’s what you’re trying to say. But you condemn Blasberg without offering any examples of what provoked you, I guess any male engaging in criticism against any female thing will draw similar scorn, so what…it’s back to that one-way street again? Am I getting that right? If so, sorry I can’t get down with that; I’m too moderate, centrist and fair. Should be an even playing field. Seriously, I think most people would agree with that. Sauce for the goose.

Actually, my curiosity is piqued now. If I was going to write a book about fashion dislikes, I’d be much tougher on the fellas…like, by a ratio of three pages to one, or so. Some of what I see younger men wearing & doing makes me think class is on the verge of becoming extinct. It’s not horrifying, quite so much as undignified. They’re wearing “please don’t take me seriously” signs in bright blinking neon.

As far as the girls? From what I can see, the major infraction is some of them are tarting themselves up, and they’re starting really young. Yeah, just letting that go, is insane. Some of these girls walking to school, you just have to wonder if words have EVER been exchanged before they stepped out the door. It ends up being a poor reflection on their parents. We’re well past the point where someone should’ve said something, and if this is how Blasberg wants to make a buck then more power to him.
