My daughter and I have a favorite song on Red: “All Too Well.” I think it’s about Jake Gylenhaal, clues being: reference to sister, plaid shirt, he’s close to his mom, Taylor had Thanksgiving with his family at Maggie G.’s house and that’s scarf season, right?
Whatever you think about Swift, and I’m a fan, she’s great with lyrics. Some lines from “Well” I really like “you called me up again just to break me like a promise”…”Cause here we are again on that little town street, You almost ran the red cause you were looking over at me” (Can totally picture that) and finally “Time won’t fly it’s like I’m paralyzed by it.”
Swift is a talented story-teller. I recommend the whole CD.
“All Too Well”
I walked through the door with you
The air was cold but something ’bout it felt like home somehow and I
Left my scarf there at your sister’s house
And you still got it in your drawer even now
Oh, your sweet disposition
And my wide-eyed gaze
We’re singing in a car getting lost Upstate
The autumn leaves falling down like pieces into place
And I can picture it after all these days
And I know it’s long gone, and that magic´s not here no more
And it might be okay, but I’m not fine at all
Cause here we are again on that little town street
You almost ran the red cause you were looking over at me
Wind in my hair, I was there, I remember it all too well
Photo album on the counter
Your cheeks were turning red
You used to be a little kid with glasses in a twin-sized bed
And your mother’s telling stories ’bout you on the t-ball team
You tell me about your past thinking your future was me
And I know it’s long gone, and there was nothing else I could do
And I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to
Cause here we are again in the middle of the night
We’re dancing round the kitchen in the refrigerator light
Down the stairs, I was there, I remember it all too well
Yeah
And maybe we got lost in translation
Maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece
´til you tore it all up
Running scared, I was there, I remember it all too well
Hey you called me up again just to break me like a promise
So casually cruel in the name of being honest
I’m a crumbled up piece of paper lying here
Cause I remember it all all all too well
Time won’t fly it’s like I’m paralyzed by it
I´d like to be my old self again
But I’m still trying to find it
After plaid shirt days and nights when you made me your own
Now you mail back my things and I walk home alone
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week
Cause it reminds you of innocence and it smells like me
You can’t get rid of it, cause you remember it all too well Yeah
Cause there we are again when I loved you so
Back before you lost the one real thing you’ve ever known
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well
Wind in my hair, you were there, you remember it all
Down the stairs, you were there, you remember it all
It was rare, I was there, I remember it all too well

Hi V.
I think this is bullshit. Taylor has many lyrics that support other women.

I disagree. Taylor is the epitome of a girl who needs a guy to make her happy. NOT ONCE has she had a song that just says your awesome the way you are and you don’t need a boy to tell you that no. With Taylor its always “YOU HAVE TO GET THE GUY” she annoys me and is so fake. I am 14 and i don’t look like Taylor swift she is beautiful outside and clearly has issues with loving herself. She is constantly being a hypocrite on interviews but no one notices because she is Taylor swift. I have never had a boyfriend nor do i need one for validation. Taylor swift needs to grow up and spend some time alone. I mean 10 consecutive boyfriends. Really? The song is stupid and focuses on the fact that she listens to other peoples opinions too much. A guy dumped me and now instead of saying to hell with him i’m awesome. I’ll try to change my self. Oh please. She is a talented whiner and she has gone through more men than most hookers. Excuse the severity of my comment but she can fuck off. Good song terrible message and awful personality.
Hi Anonymous,
“Mean” is a great anthem for power, recognizing your strength, and having faith in yourself. I blogged about it here http://reelgirl.com/2012/02/taylor-swift-sings-her-way-from-victim-to-hero-triumphs-at-grammys/. Not only do I love this song, I love this performance I linked to, hardly any make up.
Her new CD “Red” has a song called “The Lucky One” about a woman who leaves fame and money to plant a rose garden (or you could look at the “rose garden” as political as in the DC rose garden). Talyor does have lots of songs about relationships but you are wrong to say “not once.”
As far as her relationships songs, a lot of them I find really interesting and complex. “All to Well” is one of thsoe.
Also, writing your own story is empowering, that is what Taylor does that again and again with her songs, whatever part of her life they are about.
Saying that Taylor goes through more men than most hookers is slut-shaming. She is 23 years old. If a guy had that many girlfriends, he wouldn’t be ridiculed.
I appreciate your point of view but I think Taylor and her music are more complicated than you are giving her credit for. Who are you a fan of?
